A cool thing amazon has

A cool thing amazon has done: create a way for you to send gift certificates to soldiers. Salute Our Troops

Over 20,000 $20 gift certificates have been bought so far. Here's a picture of them sending them overseas. The caption: United States military personnel in Washington, D.C. prepare more than 4,000 Amazon.com gift certificates to be shipped to active service members stationed around the world through Amazon.com's Salute our Troops program, which was developed in cooperation with the Department of Defense. Through December 26, 2001, visitors to the Amazon.com web site (www.amazon.com) can purchase a $20 gift certificate for an active member of the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines. To date, more than 19,000 gift certificates have been purchased for active service members, who can redeem the certificates at any of Amazon.com's online stores. (Business Wire photo)

I'm feeling a little better today. Think we'll be drinking hot toddies and watching Leanne's new "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" DVD for a nice traditional Christmas Eve.

The somewhat stereotypical Chinese-and-a-movie looks to be the plan. Oh, but which movie? We are not sure of this yet.

I had my christmas tradition of my grandma's home made kahlua mudslides. Home made tastes way better than the bar, being she makes it with ice cream and cream, (not just cream) its more like a malt or a sundae, complete with whip cream and cherry. I drink as many as I can before she cuts me off! LOL. She gave me a shot bottle of kahlua for christmas this year, but I may not open it, just because it sort of stands for our tradition. :^>

so, while driving down to CA i heard an interesting story about how some WW1 soldiers spontaneously called a truce for a few days to celebrate Christmas. some germans came out of the trenches and set up a christmas tree adorned with candles, and one man went out and started singing christmas carols. true, he was shot and killed immediately by the french, but nevertheless, a couple of other german soldiers had already begun doing the same thing and this aroused the curoisity of the french. so before you know it they had cleared out no-man's-land of all the dead corpses, shook hands, sang some carols, the germans rolled out some kegs of beer, made a makeshift soccer ball, had a small tournament (shirts and skins). unfortunately, top brass got wind of these events and told them to get back to business. so the germans told the french that they had to start fighting again; so they would shoot a warning round up in the air to give them a chance to get in position, and then the french should shoot up in the air when they were ready and then they could get back to war. i promise it's true. they tried to continue the tradition the following year, but to no avail. the top guns would hear nothing of it. it was too strange for them. yet, it's common knowledge in business that added breaks increase employee morale and thereby increase on-the-job productivity. the military is always one step behind.
