can you believe it! in another few hours all of the 9's in our standard symbol for the year will turn to 0's and not only that but the 1 will turn into a 2! this, which may seem at first glance to be a mathematical stunt of rather dull dimensions, is actually a great reason to celebrate.
you see, the way we do things here we have a liking for attaching two or more unrelated things together and then drawing conclusions from them. for example, we like to liken the turning of any digit in our year to the phrases "new year" and "get drunk". at first, you may not see the connection, but then you'll notice that the connection is there, however subtle. it goes like this:
fact: jesus was born on the year 4 B.C. a year more or less 2000 years from today. fact: at one point in his life he turned water into wine. another fact: in one metaphor, giving your life to Christ is like having your old sinful self die, and putting on a new sin-less body of new life with Christ. you'll notice the word's "new" "wine" and "year" all mentioned in those last sentences. whenever three words of distinct meaning are placed side-by-side you get a new meaning.
the way things gain meaning is as follows: say you have a wedding, a rain cloud, and a skull. just by sitting them side-by-side, you have an omen (condensed meaning) of a failed marriage, ending in the death of one of the partners. (in fact, almost just by talking about this metaphor in the context of an up-coming wedding is a pretty bad omen) but i shall continue none-the-less: if the skull hadn't been there, it may have just been a rainy wedding (like in that old guns and roses video) but the skull brings the morbid side of the rain cloud out, just like the wedding brings the tragedy out of the skull.
in the case of the new millenium, we've got all these objects sitting together: new numbers for the year, jesus, champagne, aliens, tornadoes, computer viruses, big dropping apples, fireworks, lots of zeroes, bomb shelters, canned food, the catholic church, "armaggeddon" (the movie), and in my case the fourth year anniversary of my fiancee's first drunken attack on me and memories of being dragged along a beer-soaked floor by two large men.
of course there will be some intimations of meaning and doom.
i don't expect you guys to be updating much today, but when you get back on the first, we should talk about how all of this anticipation and plot-development unfolded.
here's the discussion about how we made this meaning, and what it turned out to be, if you would be kind enough to play.
however, if you don't like this entry with no reference to your diary, you can say so here.
